6:08 Bivariate Data & Scatter Diagrams
Spec S6
  • A correlation is a relationship between two variables in a bivariate data set
  • A correlation is positive if, in general, when one variable increases, the other also increases
  • A correlation is negative if, in general, when one variable increases, the other decreases
  • There is no correlation if increasing one variable does not affect whether the other increases or decreases
  • Scatter diagrams are useful for visually showing correlations
  • A positive correlation is shown by points forming a line from the bottom left to the top right of the graph
  • A negative correlation is shown by points forming a line from the top left to the bottom right of the graph
  • There is no correlation if the points are spread out without any clear line or pattern forming
  • The closer the points are to the correlation line, the stronger the correlation is
