Defining Area
- Area is the amount of space a 2D shape covers
- Units of area include millimeter squared, centimeter squared, and meter squared
- A square millimeter is the area covered by a square with side lengths of one millimeter
- A square centimeter is the area covered by a square with sides of one centimeter
- A square meter is the area covered by a square with sides of one meter
- Other shapes can have their areas given in terms of these standard units
- Area is calculated by breaking a shape into standard units and determining the number of units it occupies
- The units of area are all units of distance in one dimension squared to create a unit in two dimensions
- The example given involves calculating the area of an L shape made up of squares with an area of one centimeter squared
- The L shape occupies three squares
- The area of the L shape is calculated by multiplying the number of squares by the area of one square (3 x 1 = 3 centimeters squared)
