  • The area under a velocity time graph represents the distance travelled by the object in that time
  • Velocity time graph plots an object's velocity on the y axis against time on the x axis
  • Velocity is calculated by dividing the change in displacement over the change in time
  • Every point on a velocity time graph gives the object's velocity at a given moment in time
  • When velocity is constant, distance travelled can be calculated by multiplying velocity by time
  • When velocity is changing, the area under the graph needs to be calculated
  • The area can be approximated by splitting the graph into trapezia
  • The formula to calculate the area of a trapezium is Area = 1/2 (a + b) h
  • The units of the area will be meters, as it is a measure of distance travelled
  • In the given example, the distance travelled by the dog in the first four seconds is approximately 40 meters.
