5:16 Calculate exactly with fractions, surds and multiples of π; simplify surd expressions involving squares (e.g. √12 = √(4 × 3) = √4 × √3 = 2√3) and rationalise denominators

  • Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by the reciprocal of the fraction
  • The reciprocal of a number is itself divided into one
  • Taking the reciprocal of a whole number gives one over that number
  • Taking the reciprocal of a fraction involves swapping the numerator and denominator
  • To divide mixed numbers, convert them to improper fractions first
  • Cross cancel common factors before multiplying the numerators and denominators
  • Convert the final answer to a mixed number if necessary
