Enlargement
- Enlargement is a transformation that increases or decreases all side lengths by the same proportion without affecting angles
- Scale factor is the ratio of corresponding sides and can be calculated using the formula: Scale factor = length of image / length of original
- Scale factor can be less than 1, indicating that the image is smaller than the original object
- Enlargements guarantee that the object and image are similar, meaning they have equal corresponding angles and corresponding sides in the same ratio
- The center of enlargement is the point that fixes the position of the enlargement and determines where the image will be
- The scale factor of an object and image on a grid can be determined by dividing the distance to the image by the distance to the object
- To perform an enlargement, draw lines from the center of enlargement to each vertex of the shape and extend them across the coordinate grid
- Count the squares from the center of enlargement to each vertex of the shape and multiply this by the scale factor to determine the new distances for the image
- Plot the vertices of the image using the enlarged distances on the corresponding lines
- Draw the image by joining the new vertices with straight lines
