Estimating Powers

2:45 Advanced Indices & Roots
Spec N6
  • The power of a non-integer can be estimated by evaluating the powers of its nearest integers
  • To estimate, find the value of the nearest integers squared and place them on a number line
  • Estimate where the non-integer squared should go on the number line, closer to the lower integer
  • Use the number line to estimate the value of the non-integer squared
  • The estimate can be represented using the approximately equal to sign (~)
  • The actual answer may vary slightly from the estimate, but the method is still effective
  • This method is powerful and can be used to estimate square numbers
