Expanding Double Brackets with Surds
- Double brackets can involve algebraic variables or surds
- The FOIL method is used to expand double brackets
- FOIL stands for First, Outer, Inner, Last
- FOIL method ensures that both numbers in the first bracket are multiplied by both numbers in the second bracket
- Expanded expressions can be simplified using laws for addition and subtraction
- The square of a number can be written as two brackets multiplied together
- The FOIL method can be used to expand squared expressions
- When multiplying two negative numbers, the minus signs cancel out
- Group like terms and simplify using the third subtraction rule
- It is important to be comfortable with manipulating surds and using the different rules for simplification.
