Factorising Simple Quadratics

5:31 Factorisation
Spec A1 A4
  • A quadratic is an expression with its highest power in x being x squared
  • Simple quadratics have a coefficient of x squared equal to 1 and are the easiest to factorize
  • To factorize a quadratic, find two numbers that add to give the coefficient of the linear x term and multiply to give the constant term
  • When the number term is positive, the factors can be both positive or negative
  • When the number term is negative, one factor will be positive and one factor will be negative
  • Double check the answer by expanding the double bracket to get the original quadratic expression
