Identities
- An identity is an equality that is always true for any values of variables
- An identity can be shown using the identically equal to sign (three horizontal lines)
- Identities are useful for rearranging expressions, formulae, and equations
- To determine if a statement is an identity or an equation, expand and compare the left and right sides
- If the statement is always true regardless of the values of the variables, it is an identity
- If the statement is only true for specific values of the variables, it is an equation
- To find the values of variables in an identity, compare the left and right sides and simplify
- Use the fact that an identity is always true to determine the values of the variables
