  • Two events are independent if the probability of each event does not depend on whether or not the other event happens.
  • Examples of independent events include rolling a 2 with a die and drawing a heart from a deck of cards.
  • Repeated actions done under the same conditions are usually independent.
  • Examples of repeated actions leading to independent events include multiple coin tosses or multiple spins of a spinner.
  • With independent actions, probabilities are unaffected by previously seen outcomes.
  • Two events are dependent if the probability of one event does depend on whether or not the other event happens.
  • Examples of dependent events include the weather being hot and people buying ice cream.
  • Repeated actions done under changing conditions are usually dependent.
  • Examples of repeated actions causing dependent events include picking cards from a deck and picking bingo balls.
  • Actions where something is taken and not replaced will lead to dependent events.
