Introduction to Transformations

3:06 Rotation, Reflection & Translation
Spec G7 G11
  • A transformation is a way of changing the size, position, or orientation of a shape
  • Size change and position change are examples of transformations
  • Orientation change refers to the specific arrangement of a shape
  • Reflections and rotations are examples of orientation changes and transformations
  • Anything that changes the shape altogether is not a transformation
  • An object is a shape being transformed
  • An image is the result of a transformation on an object
  • The effects of transformations can be understood by comparing the coordinates of vertices of the object and image
  • A coordinate grid is often used to plot transformations
  • By comparing the coordinates of corresponding vertices, the transformation can be determined
