Mean of Grouped Data

5:36 Mean & Averages
Spec S2 S4
  • The method for calculating a mean can be adapted for group data by multiplying the midpoint of each group by its frequency to find the total.
  • A grouped data table gives the frequency of times a data value within a particular range or group appears in a set of data.
  • To work out the mean for group data, we need to work out the total of all the data and then divide by the number of data values.
  • The midpoint of each group can be calculated by adding the lower bound and the upper bound together, then dividing by 2.
  • The estimate of the overall total can be found by multiplying the midpoint of each group by its frequency and adding them together.
  • The mean can be estimated by dividing the estimate of the overall total by the sum of the frequencies.
  • The calculated mean will also be an estimate since the total was an estimate.
  • To round the answer to two decimal places, check the third decimal place and round down if it's four or less, round up if it's 5 or more.
