Multiplying by Powers of 10
- Multiplying by powers of 10 involves moving the digits in a number and adding zeros
- Multiplying by 10 moves digits one place to the left
- Each time we multiply by 10, it is the same as adding a zero to the number
- Multiplying by larger powers of 10 is the same as repeatedly multiplying by 10
- To get from 5 to 50, we multiply by 10 once
- To get from 5 to 500, we multiply by 100
- To get from 5 to 5000, we multiply by 1000
- When multiplying by 100, we are multiplying by 10 two times
- To multiply by 100, we shift the digits two places to the left and fill in the gaps with zeros
- 12 times 100 is equal to 1200
