Multiplying Decimal Numbers

4:46 Multiplying and Dividing Decimals
Spec N2
  • Multiplying decimal numbers can be complicated
  • A method to simplify multiplying decimals is to convert them into whole numbers first
  • Example: 5.72 times 1.2
  • Step 1: Multiply the numbers by 10 until they become integers
  • Step 2: Multiply the unit on the bottom by every digit on the top
  • Step 3: Multiply the 10 on the bottom by every digit on the top
  • Step 4: Add up the final two rows from units to thousands
  • Step 5: Count the number of decimal places in each factor
  • Step 6: Put the same total number of decimal places back into the answer using a decimal point
  • The answer to 5.72 times 1.2 is 6.864
