  • Two events are mutually exclusive if they cannot happen at the same time
  • Random actions have possible outcomes, and events are sets of outcomes that match certain criteria
  • Examples of random actions are rolling a die or drawing a card from a deck
  • Examples of mutually exclusive events are rolling a two and rolling an odd number, or drawing a heart and drawing a black card
  • Events that are opposite of each other will always be mutually exclusive
  • Opposite events can also be called complements of each other
  • Events will not be mutually exclusive if there is an outcome that applies to both of them
  • Events from two unrelated actions will not be mutually exclusive
