Mutually Exclusive & Exhaustive Events
- Events are exhaustive if all possible outcomes fit the criteria of at least one event
- Events are mutually exclusive if they cannot happen at the same time
- If events are both exhaustive and mutually exclusive, their probabilities will sum to one
- Opposite events are both mutually exclusive and exhaustive, so their probabilities will sum to one
- The formula for opposite events is P(not A) = 1 - P(A)
- To find the probability of an unknown event, subtract the probabilities of known events from one
- Example 1: Probability of Tina winning the card game is 0.45
- Example 2: Probability of a golfer finishing on par is 0.1
