Place Value
- Each digit in a number represents a multiple of a power of 10
- Digits are worth different amounts depending on their position within the number
- The value of each digit decreases in size from left to right
- Certain digits have special names (units digit, tens digit, hundreds digit, etc.)
- Other digits use combinations of these names
- Using a comma every three zeros can be useful in reading large numbers
- The pattern of naming digits continues (millions, billions, trillions, etc.)
- At GCSE level, it is important to know up to a hundred million
- The value of each digit can be named using the power of 10 and multiplier
- Breaking down numbers in this way is important for naming and explaining the value of each digit in a number.
