  • The lower quartile is the value that is a quarter of the way into an ordered quantitative data set
  • The position of the lower quartile is half of the position of the median
  • The upper quartile is the value that is three quarters of the way into an ordered quantitative data set
  • The position of the upper quartile is the position of the lower quartile multiplied by 3
  • Quartiles divide a data set into four equal parts
  • Quartiles can be calculated using formulas or by ordering the data set
  • Quartiles can also be found using a frequency table
  • Quartiles are useful for understanding how the values in a data set are distributed and provide a summary of the data set
