Ratio as a Fraction

4:06 Using Ratios
Spec N11 R8
  • Ratios can be rewritten as fractions
  • Splitting something in the ratio 2 to 3 is equivalent to splitting it into the fractions 2 fifths and 3 fifths
  • The fraction represented by one side of a ratio is given by the number of parts on that side over the total number of parts in the ratio
  • The fractions represented by a ratio add up to one
  • To convert a fraction to a ratio, identify the number of parts on the eaten side and the total number of parts in the ratio, then subtract the eaten parts from the total to find the uneaten parts
  • Write out the ratio with the number of eaten parts first and the number of uneaten parts second
