  • A chord is a straight line that joins one point on the edge of a circle to another
  • An arc is a portion of the circumference of a circle
  • The chord splits the circumference into two sections, both called arcs
  • The smaller arc is the minor arc and the larger arc is the major arc
  • A segment is a region bounded by a chord and the corresponding arc
  • When a chord is drawn, the circle is split into two segments
  • The larger segment is the major segment and the smaller segment is the minor segment
  • A sector is an area between two radii and the connecting arc of a circle
  • The larger sector is the major sector and the smaller sector is the minor sector
  • It is not necessary to distinguish between major and minor at GCSE level
