The Probability Scale
- Probability is a measure of how likely an event is to occur
- Events are specific sets of outcomes that satisfy certain criteria
- Probabilities are given as a number between 0 and 1
- A probability of 1 means the event is certain, while a probability of 0 means the event is impossible
- Events with a probability halfway between 0 and 1 have an even chance
- Events that have a better than even chance of happening but aren't certain are likely
- Events that have a less than even chance of occurring but are not impossible are unlikely
- Probabilities can be written as decimals, fractions, or percentages
- The terms likely and unlikely are vague and do not refer to a specific probability
- It is unlikely that you would be asked to describe a numerical probability in words at GCSE, but you should be comfortable using numbers and the probability scale for calculations.
