  • Numerical data can be used for calculations and includes things that can be counted or measured, such as the number of sweets in a jar or the amount of money people earn.
  • Categorical data can only be expressed in terms of categories, such as someone's name or their favorite food.
  • Categorical data can sometimes be represented by numbers, but the numbers themselves have no meaning.
  • Discrete data can only take certain values, such as someone's age or the fraction left of a sliced pizza.
  • Continuous data can take any value within a range, such as someone's height or the temperature.
  • Most scientific measurements will give a continuous set of data.
