  • Articles must match the noun in gender (masculine/feminine) or number (singular/plural).
Definite (the) Indefinite (a, some) Gender and number Example
el un Masc. singular el libro (book)
la una Fem. singular la casa (the house)
los unos Masc. plural los perros (the dogs)
las unas Fem. plural unas chicas (the girls)
  • Definite article: The definite article ‘the’ is used for specific nouns. In Spanish, specific ideas often use the definite article (e.g. La educación es importante. (Education is important.)). This is different from English as we wouldn’t say ‘The education is important.’
  • Indefinite articles: (‘a,’ ‘an,’ ‘some’) are used for non-specific nouns. For example: quiero un coche nuevo. (I want a new car.) Here, the non-specific noun is the car. It is non-specific because it refers to something vague (e.g any car) whereas ‘the education’ refers to a more specific idea.
