  • A fluid is a substance that can flow, it is a liquid or a gas.
  • Fluid in a container will exert a force on the walls of the container, at right angles to each wall.
  • The pressure a force exerts on a surface is given by the equation \(\text{pressure}=\text{force normal to a surface}\div\text{area of the surface}\) or \(p=\frac{F}{a}\) where:
    • \(p\) is the pressure in pascals, Pa
    • \(F\) is the force normal to a surface in N
    • \(a\) is the area of the surface in m2
