Electric motors (HT ONLY)

  • An electric motor utilises the motor effect to convert electrical energy to kinetic energy through rotation:
    • A rectangular coil of wire is placed in a magnetic field so that it can freely rotate around a pivot.
    • When a current flows through the coil, the two sides of the coil experience vertical forces in opposite directions. This causes the coil to rotate.
  • The coil receives current from a circuit connected to it with a split-ring commutator.
  • This rotates while always maintaining a connection through the use of two carbon brushes. The split ring switches brush periodically so the current reverses and the forces on the coil are always in the same direction
