Character Analysis

Hippolyta

Hippolyta is Theseus’ soon to be wife, but she’s so much more than that. She’s an Amazonian Queen, wild, beautiful, and strong, but under the pressure of Theseus’ male power, she is subdued and quiet. Thus, although she is an actual queen of a powerful group of warrior women, Shakespeare reduces her to little more than Theseus’ fiancé to prove that male authority, even in the name of love, can be crippling for women.
