Key Theme Analysis

Exploitation

Animal Farm emerges as an exposé of working-class exploitation in Soviet Russia and the subsequent perversion of freedom. Despite condemning the socialist regime established by Stalin, Orwell was actually a strong supporter of socialist policies, but believed that the Soviet Union distorted these ideals to align with their own agenda of power. Orwell’s experiences of classism in Burma prompted him to champion the rights of the proletariat, a belief that essentially distinguished him as a democratic socialist.
