Henry Lennox

North and South

Mr Lennox is a determined young lawyer with a sharp intelligence. He is incredibly sure of himself and knows that success is in his future. However, in the South, intelligence isn’t particularly highly regarded (particularly in comparison to physical appearance). Mr Lennox is disdainful of Edith and his brother’s superficial existence, with no patience for them, Edith especially. He is sarcastic and quietly mocking, condescending toward all they value. Mr Lennox isn’t a highly romantic person by any means, but falls deeply in love with Margaret. He is hurt and aggravated when she refuses him, but vows to continue to love her. This determination is evident at the end of the novel when he tries to win over Margaret again.
