The themes of class and crime are integral to our understanding of the text. Reflective of the turbulent changes of the nineteenth century, Victorian attitudes towards crime were inextricably linked to the strict class systems and their prejudices. Through these themes, Stevenson critiques the inherent prejudices and hypocrisies of the upper classes, exposing the incorrect assumption that crime was only a lower class problem.
