Resource cycles and environmental change

  • Animal and plant cells share some, but not all organelles.
  • Mitochondria are the site of aerobic respiration where energy is released from glucose.
  • Cytoplasm is water-based and contains lots of the organelles. It is where most cell reactions take place.
  • Nucleus contains deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which is the genetic information that controls the cell. DNA is organised into chromosomes.
  • Cell membrane encloses the cell and controls which substances go in and out. Many simple substances travel by diffusion.
  • Ribosomes are the site of protein synthesis.
  • Chloroplasts (plant cells) contain the green pigment chlorophyll, which absorbs light for photosynthesis.
  • Cell wall (plant and algal cells) made of cellulose, which strengthens the cell.
