  • The Treaty of Versailles was designed to formally end WWI and prevent Germany from starting another war, weakening it militarily, economically, and territorially in the name of peace.
  • You can use the acronym BRAT for the main terms of the Treaty:
    • Blame: Germany had to accept full responsibility for the war.
    • Reparations: Germany had to pay £6.6 billion for damages.
    • Armed forces: the army was reduced to 100,000 men; no tanks, submarines, or planes. The Rhineland was demilitarised.
    • Territory: Germany lost 13% of its land and 12.5% of its population. They lost all their colonies and the Empire. It was forbidden to join with Austria (Anschluss).
  • The Germans called the Treaty a diktat (dictated peace) and resented what they saw as disproportionately harsh terms that would cripple the nation when it was already in a weakened state
