Adding & Subtracting Decimals
- The same methods can be used for adding and subtracting decimals as for whole numbers
- It is important for students to be able to manipulate decimals comfortably
- The method shown is one way to add and subtract decimals, but other methods can also be used
- To add decimals, line up the digits and decimals, fill in any zeros to make the decimals the same length, and then add the columns starting from the right
- To subtract decimals, follow the same steps as for addition, but subtract the columns instead of adding them
- It may be necessary to borrow from the next column when subtracting decimals
- The decimal point should be placed in the answer so that it lines up with the columns above
