Advanced Quadratics - Inspection Method
- Some quadratics with coefficients of x squared greater than one can be difficult to factorise using the regular splitting method
- These quadratics can be factorised by inspection using the cross method
- To factorise using the cross method, find a factor pair for the quadratic term and a factor pair for the constant term
- Multiply one factor from each pair along diagonal lines and add the products to get the linear term
- Experiment with different factor pairs until the correct match is found
- Once the correct match is found, add horizontally to find what goes in the double brackets
- Always check the answer by expanding the double brackets to ensure it matches the original expression
- Repeat the process if the correct factor pairs are not initially found
- Make sure to consider negative factors when finding factor pairs for negative constant terms
- It is important to check the answer by expanding the double brackets to verify correctness.
