Algebraic Variables, Terms & Expressions

4:42 Introduction to Algebra
Spec A3
  • An algebraic variable is a letter or symbol that represents an unknown or changeable number
  • Variables are numbers that need to be found or can change depending on the context
  • Any letter or symbol can be used as a variable, not just x and y
  • A coefficient is a number multiplying a variable and is often written in front of the variable
  • An algebraic expression is a combination of letters and/or numbers using standard operations
  • Divisions in algebraic expressions are usually written as fractions
  • Algebraic equations and formulae contain equal signs
  • Equations are satisfied for specific values of the variable, while formulae are satisfied for infinite possible values
  • An identity is when both sides of the equal sign have the same value regardless of the variables
  • A term is a single part of an expression with a lone letter or number multiplied together
  • Expressions can be thought of as a list of terms being added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided
