Geometry and measures Mensuration and calculation

Area of a Sector

2:58 Know the formulae: circumference of a circle = 2πr = πd; area of a circle = πr²; calculate perimeters of 2D shapes, including circles; areas of circles and composite shapes; surface area and volume of spheres, pyramids, cones and composite solids
Spec G17
  • The area of a sector is a fraction of the area of a circle
  • The formula for the area of a sector is theta/360 * area of whole circle
  • The formula can also be written in terms of the radius as theta/360 * pi * r^2
  • To calculate the area of a sector, you need the radius and the sector angle
  • In the example given, the radius is 7 centimeters and the sector angle is 90 degrees
  • Substituting these values into the formula gives an area of 38.5 centimeter squared (to three significant figures)
