Areas of Compound Shapes

3:37 Know and apply formulae to calculate: area of triangles, parallelograms, trapezia;; volume of cuboids and other right prisms (including cylinders)
Spec G16
  • Compound shapes are made up of multiple simple shapes
  • The area of a compound shape can be found by adding up the areas of the individual shapes
  • In order to calculate the area, the shapes can be split into smaller rectangles
  • The length and width of each rectangle can be determined
  • The area of each rectangle can be calculated by multiplying the length and width
  • The areas of the rectangles can be added together to find the total area of the compound shape
  • There are multiple methods to calculate the area of compound shapes, such as subtracting the area of smaller shapes from a larger shape
  • It is important to be able to calculate the area of compound shapes in exams or problem-solving situations.
