  • A compass is used to describe directions
  • The N represents North, E represents East, S represents South, and W represents West
  • Compasses are useful navigational tools
  • Bearings are angles measured clockwise from North
  • Bearings are always given with three digits
  • When a bearing is more than 180 degrees from North, a protractor is used
  • The angle from zero degrees on the protractor to the line is measured
  • 180 degrees is added to the angle measurement to account for the missing angle from North to South
  • The bearing of the line is determined by adding the measured angle to 180 degrees
  • A practice example is given to measure the bearing of a boat from a lighthouse
