Calculating Gradients

4:52 Straight Line Graphs
Spec A10
  • The gradient of a line is a measure of its steepness
  • The gradient is equal to the change in the y direction divided by the change in the x direction
  • The gradient can be calculated using the formula y2 minus y1 over x2 minus x1
  • Two points on the line need to be selected to calculate the gradient
  • The choice of which points to select is arbitrary
  • The gradient can be simplified to a numerical value
  • A positive gradient indicates that the line goes up as we move from left to right
  • A negative gradient indicates that the line goes down as we move from left to right
