Compound Unit Conversions
- Compound units are made up of two or more other units
- To convert a compound unit, each of the units that make up the compound unit must be converted separately
- One kilometer is equal to a thousand meters
- One hour is equal to three thousand six hundred seconds
- Once the units have been converted separately, the conversions need to be combined in the same way as the individual units
- One kilometer per hour can be thought of as one kilometer divided by an hour
- A kilometer is a thousand meters and an hour is three thousand six hundred seconds
- One kilometer per hour is equal to 0.278 meters per second to three significant figures
- Converting kilometers per hour and meters per second is the most common compound unit conversion
- You may be asked to convert any given compound units in exams
- Example question: Calculate 500 meters per second to kilometers per hour
- Step 1: Convert each unit of the compound unit separately
- Step 2: Combine each conversion and multiply by the original value
- Final answer: 1800 kilometers per hour
