Conditional Probability from Venn Diagrams
- Conditional probability is the probability of an event given that a previous event has happened
- Venn diagrams can be used to sort values into sets and calculate probabilities
- To calculate the probability of a number being square given that it's even, we only consider the numbers in the intersection of the sets
- Olivia's parents choosing a laptop with a large hard drive given that they choose one with a touchscreen can be calculated using a Venn diagram
- Steps to calculate the probability: restrict the diagram, determine the number of outcomes remaining, determine the region for the given criteria, determine the number of outcomes in this region, divide the number of outcomes by the restricted total
- Another example is calculating the probability of someone liking jingle A given that they liked more than one jingle using a Venn diagram
- Steps to calculate the probability: restrict the diagram, determine the frequency remaining, determine the region for the given criteria, determine the frequency in this region, divide the number of outcomes by the restricted total
