Cumulative Frequency Graphs
- Cumulative frequency graph plots upper bounds in a set of group data against their cumulative frequencies
- Cumulative frequency is a running count of the frequencies up to and including a given group
- X coordinates of the points on the graph are given by the upper bound of the group
- Y coordinates of the points are given by the cumulative frequency of that group
- The graph starts at the x axis with a point at the lower bound of the first group (usually zero)
- The final point on the graph has coordinates equal to the final cumulative frequency and the upper bound of the final group
- Plots can be joined with straight lines or a single smooth curve
- Straight lines are easier to join, but a curve is more likely to represent the actual distribution of frequencies within the groups
- Suitable scale for each axis must be chosen
- The scale on the y axis must start at zero and go to at least the largest cumulative frequency
- Example given of plotting a cumulative frequency graph for pressure readings from a boiler
- Steps provided for plotting the graph: choose scale, plot starting point, plot cumulative frequencies for each group, join plotted points together
