Dividing Decimal Numbers

6:20 Multiplying and Dividing Decimals
Spec N2
  • When dividing decimals, use short division and insert the decimal point back in at the end
  • Set up the division with the dividend inside the division symbol and the divisor on the outside
  • Use short division to determine how many times the divisor goes into each digit
  • Place the decimal point in the answer above the decimal point in the dividend
  • When dividing one decimal by another, make the divisor an integer and multiply the dividend by the same amount
  • Set up the division with the multiplied numbers and cancel out the common factors
  • Use short division to determine the answer
  • If the divisor is a decimal, follow the same steps as if both numbers were decimals
  • Multiply the divisor and dividend by the same amount to make the divisor an integer
  • Set up the division with the multiplied numbers and use long division to determine the answer
