Expanding Double Brackets with Surds

6:27 Calculate exactly with fractions; calculate exactly with multiples of π; calculate exactly with surds; simplify surd expressions involving squares (eg √12 = √(4 × 3) = √4 × √3 = 2√3) and rationalise denominators
Spec A4 N8
  • Double brackets can involve algebraic variables or surds
  • The FOIL method is used to expand double brackets
  • FOIL stands for First, Outer, Inner, Last
  • FOIL method ensures that both numbers in the first bracket are multiplied by both numbers in the second bracket
  • Expanded expressions can be simplified using laws for addition and subtraction
  • The square of a number can be written as two brackets multiplied together
  • The FOIL method can be used to expand squared expressions
  • When multiplying two negative numbers, the minus signs cancel out
  • Group like terms and simplify using the third subtraction rule
  • It is important to be comfortable with manipulating surds and using the different rules for simplification.
