- Fractions describe parts of a whole number
- Numerator is on top and shows the number of parts taken
- Denominator is on the bottom and shows the total number of parts the whole is divided into
- Example: one third means one part taken out of three total parts
- To shade a fraction of a shape, count the total number of parts in the shape and compare it to the denominator in the fraction
- Shade in the number of parts in the numerator
- Example: shade three tenths of the shape (denominator is 10, numerator is 3)
- Example: work out what fraction of the shape is shaded (denominator is 8, numerator is 5)
