  • When dividing indices with the same base, subtract the second power from the first power
  • Example: 5 cubed divided by 5 squared is equal to 5 to the power of 1
  • Useful rule for maths and mathematical sciences
  • Example: j to the power of 8 divided by j to the power of 10 is equal to j to the power of -2
  • Example: 3 squared times 5 cubed divided by 3 to the power of 6 times 5 to the power of -2
  • Group numbers with the same base
  • Rewrite brackets using the law for subtracting indices
  • Simplify the indices to get the answer
