Index Multiplication Rule

5:11 Working with Indicies
Spec N7 A4
  • When multiplying indices with the same base, add the powers together
  • Example: 4 squared times 4 cubed = 4 to the power of 5
  • This rule is important for exams
  • Example: b to the power of 6 times b to the power of 13 = b to the power of 19
  • The rule also applies to negative indices
  • Example: z to the power of -12 times z to the power of 15 = z cubed
  • Group numbers with the same base before applying the rule
  • Example: 3 squared times 4 cubed times 3 to the power of 5 times 4 to the power of -6
  • Simplify each group separately and then combine the results
