Inequality Solutions on Number Lines

3:55 Solving Inequalities
Spec A22
  • The solution to an inequality is the range of values that the variable can take
  • An inequality is a way of describing a relationship between two expressions
  • An algebraic inequality will only be satisfied when the variable lies within a particular range
  • A number line can be used to visualize the range of possible values for the variable
  • Open circles indicate strict inequalities, where the variable cannot be equal to the specified value
  • Closed circles indicate non strict inequalities, where the variable can be equal to the specified value
  • Arrows show that all values on one side of the circle satisfy the inequality
  • A line between two circles shows that all values between the circles satisfy the inequality
  • Drawing number lines is a useful tool for visualization and understanding inequalities
