Multiplying Decimal Numbers
- Multiplying decimal numbers can be complicated
- A method to simplify multiplying decimals is to convert them into whole numbers first
- Example: 5.72 times 1.2
- Step 1: Multiply the numbers by 10 until they become integers
- Step 2: Multiply the unit on the bottom by every digit on the top
- Step 3: Multiply the 10 on the bottom by every digit on the top
- Step 4: Add up the final two rows from units to thousands
- Step 5: Count the number of decimal places in each factor
- Step 6: Put the same total number of decimal places back into the answer using a decimal point
- The answer to 5.72 times 1.2 is 6.864
