  • Rounding a number to a certain number of significant figures is useful in the sciences
  • Significant figures are digits that contribute to the precision of a number
  • Insignificant zeroes are ignored, significant zeroes are counted
  • If the digit to the right is 5 or greater, round up; if it is less than 5, round down
  • Example: rounding 5,607,012 to 3 significant figures
  • Example: rounding 0.012345 to 2 significant figures
