Sectors, Arcs & Segments
- A chord is a straight line that joins one point on the edge of a circle to another
- An arc is a portion of the circumference of a circle
- The chord splits the circumference into two sections, both called arcs
- The smaller arc is the minor arc and the larger arc is the major arc
- A segment is a region bounded by a chord and the corresponding arc
- When a chord is drawn, the circle is split into two segments
- The larger segment is the major segment and the smaller segment is the minor segment
- A sector is an area between two radii and the connecting arc of a circle
- The larger sector is the major sector and the smaller sector is the minor sector
- It is not necessary to distinguish between major and minor at GCSE level
